Armored Railway Cars

Two kits are presented here, the Kommandowangen, the command car, kit 82924, and the Geschutzwagen, the car with gun, kit 82923.

I procured these models to practice freehand airbrushing three color German camouflage patterns. The kits are very basic and well engineered. Very little filler was used. The wheels do not turn. Flanges are pretty close to scale which leads an issue. It is difficult keep the cars on the kit provided rails. If I were building one of these kits again, I would add extra weight to the inside bottom of each car to help hold the cars on the tracks. Also during the weathering process, I did notice that the door panel lines on the Geschutzwagen were omitted.

Painting started with base yellow color. I then used my smart phone to take pictures of the side, end and top of a car. Using MS Power Point, pictures were placed to show profiles of each side of a car. Using a Power Point option, the photos were converted to black and white, leaving outlines of the cars. After printing a couple of copies, I used colored pencils to estimate three color patterns. The objective was to have an even amount of the yellow, green and brown colors. Several “draft” attempts were done. The actual painting process roughly followed the drawn patterns.
